Construction for the new Elon Town Center is underway and has required that part of the sidewalk along Williamson Avenue remain unavailable to pedestrians. Similarly, the work has produced a considerable amount of noise over the past few weeks. In order to thank the community for its patience, the Town Center and Samet Corporation, the Greensboro-based company hired to build the three-story building, hosted a free ice cream social on Wednesday afternoon. The event was held on the lawn across from the new building.
Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream handed out a variety of their homemade flavors, including cake batter, brown sugar oatmeal and chocolate, while the members of the Samet Corporation set up a booth to give out information and conduct a free raffle for a pair of iPod shuffles. Members of the Elon community lined up for the mid-day treat.
The town center will be home to Elon’s bookstore, as well as several additional venues and shops. It is set to open in time for the 2011-2012 school year.*All photos taken by Kellye Coleman
